How to Change Privacy Settings for Alexa

You may have recently read news about Amazon accessing data from Alexa including some actual real conversations that people have had with Alexa. If you read this and had some concerns then there is a small change you can make in the Alexa settings to keep human employees from listening to your conversations.

  • Open the Alexa app on your smartphone
  • Select Settings
  • Select your Alexa Account
  • Select Alexa Privacy
  • Select Manage How Your Data Improves Alexa
  • Turn off the button next to Help Develop New Features

The best way to actually stop Alexa listening is to mute it when not in use. This can easily be done by pressing the microphone button on top of the device and when the button is red it is off.

You can also check what has been recorded and delete it. You might want to have a listen through and see what you have said to Alexa on a drunken night when it never does what you ask it to do.

  • Open the Alexa app on your smartphone
  • Select Settings
  • Select your Alexa Account
  • Select Alexa Privacy
  • Select Review Voice History
  • If you wish to delete your history (note this is pretty much resetting the device so Alexa may not recognise your voice and may need setting up again) you can click on Date Range
  • Select All History
  • This doesn’t stop your future recordings
